When it comes to riding and racing bikes i've noticed many people measure their success by their Podiums. Sadly i feel this is a very inaccurate way of measurement and often feel bad for those individuals that base their entire success on that. Many times i meet people who i believe are extremely successful and have fought through many other things just to get to the starting line of a race or charity ride. I'm not trying to get all soft on everyone here but really winning is nice and it does help attract sponsors but its not the only way of measuring your cycling success.
I have won quit a few races but what i remember the most are the memories, stories and friends that have all been made through traveling, riding and racing even some from injuries whether they were mine or someone else. I feel like the last 10 years of my life have been extremely success because i have directly influenced people to live healthier lives, buy a bike, try clipless pedals, go for a ride, enter a race. I've helped people climb better, jump logs and ride rocks. Heck i've even shamed people into wearing helmets. Those all equal success for me.
Sure i've peobably made a few enemies along the way but i'm guessing more friends for sure. I will continue to race and fly the Trek Flag proudly but i never forget that just a few short years ago a 4 mile ride was major for me and clipless pedals were very scary.
see ya on the trails, at a shop ride or on the road somewhere.
